Yoga is a form of exercise that has been around for over 6000 years. Originating from Hinduism in India, yoga has evolved over thousands of years into a codified system that offers health and healing to both mind and body.

Yoga For The Body

Done regularly, yoga offers numerous health benefits. One of the health benefits that the practitioner of yoga procures is flexibility of the joints and body. When one is young and quite flexible this may not seem very important, however, as you age you will begin to see the importance that this has to offer to your overall physical well-being.

Arthritis, for example, can be a debilitating disease that affects the joints. And while Western medicine may not have any cures for arthritis, Eastern medicine has been able to offer arthritis suffers relief from their arthritic pain through yoga.

Regular practice of yoga helps to bring increased oxygen to the joints, which helps to remove waste matter that often develops - leading to disease. Yoga helps to alleviate any disorder of the joints and the spine by bringing a fresh supply of blood and oxygen to the area. Yoga keeps the joints supple and smooth to relieve stiffness of ankles, knees, shoulders, fingers and all the joints in the body.

Yoga has also been proven to be effective against diabetes which is caused by too much glucose in the blood. Although there is no cure for diabetes in the West, it can be aided by yoga which is well known for activating the glands in the body so that they can operate at optimal levels. Practicing various positions of yoga helps to control the blood sugar level by activating your pancreas to produce more insulin. In general, yoga helps to normalize the body’s chemistry which can lead to greater health.

Additionally, if you are trying to lose weight, yoga is a perfect adjunct to any weight loss program. Again, because yoga stimulates the glands in the body to improve their function, weight loss is enhanced since it aids the ability of the body to metabolize fat. The thyroid gland, for example, which is directly involved in fat metabolism, can be stimulated by a number of different poses in yoga.

Moreover, yoga has also been proven effective in a number of other health problems including: heart disease, cancer, headaches, allergies, high blood pressure, asthma, and high cholesterol.

Yoga For The Mind

However, not only is yoga an effective treatment for various ailments of the body, it is also useful for the health of the mind as well. Through the use of various breathing exercises and meditation, it can help to alter your state of mind to relieve tension and stress that may be stored in the body.

Stress, which is a by-product of our modern society, can lead to a whole host of health issues including obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, some autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and colitis.

Researchers have found that yoga is effective in alleviating stress and all ailments associated with it. When you practice yoga, you will learn about the importance of proper breathing as it pertains to your physical and mental health. You will also learn a variety of breathing techniques and modes of meditation that will provide effective relief from stress and anxiety.

In summary, when practiced with regularity and awareness, the benefits that yoga offers are many. And while it isn’t a cure-all for every affliction, yoga offers health benefits that will not only heal the body but the mind as well.

Mediterranean Diet: One Of The Healthiest Diets

May 9th, 2006

In the United States and perhaps in other countries as well, the Mediterranean diet has received a lot of attention. One reason for this is the lower incidences of heart disease and mortality rates found in Mediterranean countries as compared to those of the United States and the West, in general.

The Mediterranean countries consist of those countries on the Mediterranean Basin including Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Monaco, just to name a few.

Although these countries are quite different from each other culturally, religiously and politically, they all share a similar diet. This, researchers believe, is the reason for the high life-expectancy rates and significantly low incidences of chronic diseases.

Researchers believe that the key to the Mediterranean diet is the high consumption of Olive Oil. Olive Oil is used in large quantities to impart a rich, robust flavor in Mediterranean diets. It is used extensively in a variety of dishes as opposed to margarine, animal fats and other hydrogenated fats that are consumed in high quantities in countries like the United States. Fats consumed in the United States tend to come from animal sources while fats in Mediterranean diets come from Olive Oil.

Managing Diabetes With A Diabetic Diet

May 5th, 2006

Diabetes is a serious chronic disease which affects over 20 million Americans. Additionally, 41 million more Americans have a condition called pre-diabetes.

In its simplest form, diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar or glucose in the blood. This occurs when the pancreas - a gland behind the stomach - produces too little insulin or ineffective insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the body to absorb and utilize the glucose in the body. If there is not enough insulin in the body to manage the sugar levels in the blood, glucose levels rise abnormally, resulting in symptoms that include excessive urination, excessive thirst and hunger, weakness and, in time, damage to the kidneys, heart, eyes and nerves.

However, whether you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to know that diet has a major role to play in managing the disease and that diabetes can be controlled with a diabetic diet.

Lose Weight with the South Beach Diet

May 3rd, 2006

The South Beach diet has gained a lot of notoriety in recent years. Many dieters like the South Beach diet plan because they don’t feel hungry when they are on the program. This can probably be attributed to the fact that the diet consists of three full meals a day with snacks - which are mandatory. Snacks are mandatory while on the program because they help to curb the feeling of hunger which often leads to overeating.

The diet itself is divided into 3 phases. The first phase, being the hardest, lasts for about two weeks. Phase 1 is the most difficult for many because it is the phase in which someone on the program has to give up the most foods that they may have been used to eating before starting the program. However, this is also the phase when many people may experience a rapid amount of weight loss.
